Even though there may not be traditional, in-person events right now, there are still a number of incredible organizations that are stepping up with creative initiatives to support our amazing community. Used.ca is incredibly proud to continue supporting great local initiatives. If you have an initiative in our community that would benefit from Used.ca’s support please contact Nicki@Used.ca. We will all get through this together!

BC Children’s Hospital Jean up

Jeans Day has evolved into something way bigger: a month-long movement in May called Jean Up. The Jean Up movement is about changing the very meaning of wearing jeans to be a symbol of what one stands for—helping kids at BC Children’s Hospital get out of their hospital gowns and back into their jeans. It’s also gone fully digital, which means it’s easier than ever for people to take part from their own homes. To get involved, donate online at JeanUp.ca, and then pick a day, week or even the entire month of May to wear your favourite denim. Supporters are encouraged to post selfies in their jeans on social media to show their support of BC’s kids. Don’t forget to tag @bcchf and use the hashtag #JeanUp—and for those on Instagram, be sure to search “Jean Up” in the GIF area to add your virtual sticker to your selfie.

Al’s 21 for 21K in support of CFAX Santas Anonymous

CFAX Santas Anonymous work year-round to ensure that local children in Greater Victoria have the opportunity to be involved with summer camps, play safely on playgrounds, and have healthy nutrition at school. The current circumstances are not stopping this charity and board member Al Ferraby from supporting the local community. You may know Al as the host of the morning show on CFAX 1070 Radio. Al will be doing his annual marathon “Al’s 21 for 21k” in support of Victoria’s youth, donations for this amazing fundraiser can be made here.

United Way’s Hotels for Frontline Workers

In partnership with Accent Inns, United Way’s new Hotels for Frontline Workers Fund is allowing donors to help cover the costs of accommodation for frontline and essential workers who are working long hours and putting themselves at risk while taking care of our community. Workers can take advantage of a highly discounted rate per night so that they can get rest and self-isolate during this extraordinary time. You can learn more about this wonderful initiative here.

Victoria Hospitals Foundation Hospital Heroes

The Victoria Hospitals Foundation works in partnership with Island Health to provide donations to every area of care at Royal Jubilee, Victoria General, and Gorge Road hospitals raising money for medical equipment, special projects, education and research. Last year alone, over 370 pieces of urgently needed medical equipment were funded.

The Hospital Heroes initiative focuses on showcasing the amazing frontline workers who are giving their all day after day for their community. Please read about the initiative and consider donating if you are able to help support our local healthcare system.

Victoria Foundation Rapid Relief Fund

Victoria Foundation, Times Colonist and the Jawl family have recognized the disproportionate impact on vulnerable residents of the South Island who are less prepared to deal with the health, social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a greater need for community-based social supports. This incredible cause has already raised millions of dollars and counting for coronavirus emergency relief. According to the Victoria Foundation website “a coalition of business and philanthropic partners joined together to launch the Rapid Relief Fund on Saturday, March 21, 2020, to quickly disburse funds to local Registered Charities and Qualified Donees providing front-line services to vulnerable populations whose staff, volunteers, programs, and operations have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.”
