Shelter: BC SPCA - Vancouver Animal ID: 473799 Birthdate: July 19, 2018 - Puppy Spayed/Neutered: Yes Female Cute puppy alert!!!! If you've clicked on Kia's profile you have an amazing eye for cute puppies :) We think Kia is one of our cutest little ones to come to us for help. Thank you to her previous guardians for reaching out to us and allowing us to find her a home. Kia has been in foster care for several weeks while we determine her medical needs. You see Kia has megaesophagus which means she has a large esophagus so when she eats or drinks her food and water doesn't slide down to her stomach like it should. This poses several risks like malnutrition and pneumonia that can be life-threatening. What does this mean for Kia? This is a life-long issue where she needs to sit up to eat and remain sitting for 10 - 15 minutes following each meal (no exceptions). There is a chair designed specifically for dogs with megaesophogus called 'Baily Chair'. She can't be given random treats, her food is either pureed or canned (mushy), she will need to visit her veterinarian regularly, and she may need to visit her vet if at any time there is suspected pneumonia or other complications. Other than these issues Kia is a normal happy playful puppy! If you're interested or considering opening your home to Kia there are three things we ask you to do: 1)Read about megaesophagus https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/megaesophagus 2)Speak to your veterinarian about megaesophagus and what is involved 3)Fill out an adoption application for Kia & email it to vancouver@spca.bc.ca subject 'Kia' Once you've completed these steps an adoption counsellor will contact you to discuss Kia's needs and arrange a time for you to speak with Kia's foster home.
