We have this fine Fruit Serpentine Soapstone sculpture of a Hippopotamus ~ created by a celebrated master Carver , Alek Kambiri ( now retired ) from Zimbabwe .
The piece weighs in at 13 lbs and measures 12' by 6" wide .
Fruit Serpentine is native to the Kwekwe region of Zimbabwe , and is a hard and difficult to carve striated green and brown soapstone that gives off a shimmering light when placed in sunlight . Truly one of the most attractive varieties of Soapstone .
Alek Kambiri has been known worldwide for the fine quality of his work , and his pieces have been seen and purchased in Galleries and Institutions far and wide , depicting themes from African wildlife . This really is a unique artpiece .
