Christmas is a special time of year. Lights, candles and carols are some of the things that are especially prominent in this season. In acknowledgement of the other festivities that also take place - Hannukah, and Winter Solstice - it has become politically correct to say "Happy Holidays". Opera Appassionata's special event will focus on the story where these three traditions intersect. Magi, astronomers for whom the Solstice was very special, read about a newborn King in the stars and come to Jerusalem to look for him. The Jewish High Priests and scholars point them toward Bethlehem where the shepherds had already encountered Christ, whose birth is celebrated at Christmas.
The earliest complete musical setting of the original story as recorded by Matthew and Luke is by Heinrich Schuetz, written during or shortly after the 30 years war. The exciting mix of Early Baroque and Renaissance styles brings the kind of drama into the story that his friend and colleague, Monteverdi, was known for. Opera Appassionata will present this masterpiece as a Collegium Musicum with soloists and orchestra in the original German with a provided translation.
This concert is sure to be a special treat for the entire family and proceeds will go to the Union Gospel Mission to feed the homeless on the Downtown East Side. There are 3 dates to choose from, but as always with Opera Appassionata, it's best to purchase or reserve your tickets early!
